Translation Memories
Modern translations are often conducted using industry specific Translation Memory (TM) software. This software greatly benefits both the translator and you, the customer, as it eases the translation process, ensures consistent language usage, and ultimately reduces prices and turnaround times.
The software works by storing translated phrases in a database or memory as the translation is conducted. This database is organised by the software in such a way that the translated phrases can be reused for future translation services.
Using a translation memory means that future translation jobs can reuse the existing translations, so the translator doesn't have to begin all over again. This leads to many benefits:
Consistency: By automatically reusing the same phrase between all your translation, the consistency of phrase and terminology can be ensured. Rather than the same phrase being translated differently each time, you can be assured that the same language will be used even if different translators work on it.
Speed of Translation Services: Even if a phrase for translation doesn't exist exactly in the TM, the software can still present an attempt at the translation based on what it does know of the language. This can speed up the job of the translator as they only have to edit the suggestions rather than translate anew.
Cost Savings: Because it reduces the time and effort from the translator, using the TM software basically equates to cost savings for you.
